Udo Onwere speaks to The Times

Our  Partner Udo Onwere has been interviewed by Catherine Baksi for The Times’ In Conversation series.

Speaking with Catherine, Udo reflects on his journey from professional football to law, sharing how his experiences on the pitch have shaped his legal practice and inspired his latest venture, M&C Saatchi Football, co-founded with ex-player, pundit and long-time friend Jamie Redknapp.

Discussing the role of M&C Saatchi, of which Udo is the sole legal advisor, he explains that the agency provides career planning, mentoring and legal advice to young footballers. “Jamie does the mentoring and I’m tasked with dealing with all the legal side of things.”

He explains that there are two things that the young players need to understand: “how to deal with disappointment and to realise that they will always have to prove themselves.”

On his sporting and legal careers, Udo tells The Times: “I always maintain that being a lawyer is easier than being a footballer… there is an element of being a footballer that people might overlook. It is obviously quite glamorous and enjoyable, but there is a lot of performance pressure that comes with that.”

The interview was published in The Times, 2 October 2025, and can be read in full here.
